Volunteers help students succeed at Bruce Drysdale

When Marilyn Yoder put out a call for volunteers to work with students at Bruce Drysdale Elementary, she thought she would do well to get 10 or maybe 20 people.

So when 55 people attended a meeting at St. James Episcopal Church in August, Yoder said she was floored.

"I was thrilled," she said. "It was a positive shot in the arm for the other volunteers, the ones who have been doing this for a while. And the principal and teachers have been very cooperative. They are thrilled to have all the help."

Yoder served as the school's reading specialist from 2003-08 before becoming volunteer coordinator. In addition to the response she got from the call for volunteers, Yoder said she was impressed with the caliber of the people willing to get involved with the students, many who come from disadvantaged home situations where they don't get much homework help from working parents.
