Occasionally newspapers make mistakes and run articles with incorrect or even sensationalist material. I am proud to say this is not one of those times at the Blue Banner.
On Thursday our new media editor, Caitlin Byrd, shared part of an article from the Asheville Citizen-Times on the Blue Banner’s Tumblr blog and then linked the post to our Facebook page. The article reported the arrest of a UNC Asheville Dean’s List student, Kathryn Timberlake, who was taken into custody at her residence on Barnard Avenue on multiple drug offenses.
“As new media editor, sharing, reporting and breaking news comes with my job description. I manage our Facebook page, Twitter account and Tumblr blog. By all counts, I’m constantly looking for news and engaging with students, readers and individuals in the Asheville community. When I saw a student at UNCA was facing multiple drug charges that landed her with a $10,500 bond, I knew it was news. ...” Byrd said.
The part of the article that Byrd posted from the Asheville Citizen-Times included details of the student’s charges, which come from warrants at the Buncombe County magistrate’s office. ...
In a matter of only a few hours after the post went up, UNCA students began to respond. The Blue Banner’s staff watched as our readers posted comments to the link on our Facebook page bashing our paper, the job we do and our faculty adviser, Michael Gouge. ...Read the full article
