Next week Asheville's city council will decide whether to sell the naming rights of the Asheville Civic Center to US Cellular.
There is precious-little time to prevent this from happening. Let's meet-up TONIGHT over pizza & pints, compare notes, see what we can do as a community to halt intrusive adverting in the heart of downtown, and, discuss funding alternatives for the Asheville Civic Center.
This will _not_ be a "Hate On US Cellular/Sam Powers/People Who Support This Idea" session. Instead we will explore ways to educate decision makers about the negative consequences of selling off Asheville's identity, and propose solutions to address the Asheville Civic Center's long-term needs.

The Asheville Citizen-Times reports on Nov. 14:

Ingles Sales and Marketing Vice President Tom Outlaw e-mailed City Council members Saturday saying he was surprised by the announcement and didn’t know naming rights were “open to bidding.”
“As one of Asheville’s largest employers and taxpayers, we would be interested in this process,” Outlaw said in the e-mail, which was distributed publicly by Councilman Cecil Bothwell. Outlaw could not be reached Monday. ...
“When I talked to Mr. (Bob) Ingle myself, he said in no uncertain terms he was not interested,” [City Council member Jan] Davis said.
Davis said he approached other Ingles officials more recently about sponsoring the basketball tournament, whose return to Asheville is spurring much of the center’s renovation, and got a similar response.
