McDowell County tells store owner sign regs apply to his "American-owned" sign

McDowell News reports:
The owner of a Marion convenience store said he’s being targeted for the handmade “American Owned” sign that he placed on display in the bed of his pickup truck parked in front of his business.

“You mean to tell me in the United States that you can’t have a sign that says ‘American Owned?’” asks James Lee Webb, owner of the Kwik as a Wink store on West Henderson Street.

But Heather Cotton, the city’s planning and development director, said Webb only has to follow the city’s rules about the placement of signs and the message of his “American Owned” sign is not the issue.

“He can have those signs as long as he installs them according to city code standards,” said Cotton. “They can either be wall-mounted or free standing but they have to be installed permanently. It is absolutely not a content violation. We don’t regulate sign content.” ...Read the full article
