Painkiller accidents increasing in mountain communities

Abuse of prescription drugs has become an epidemic, according to a new government report.

Drug overdose deaths, mainly from powerful prescription painkillers, have tripled in the last decade, and North Carolina is among states with the highest rates of overdose deaths.

In some mountain counties, one in four accidental deaths is blamed on prescription painkillers, according to police.

The state has a database to help curb a practice known as “doctor shopping” but more needs to be done, experts say.Read the full article
