“Deer hunting is the most popular form of hunting in North Carolina, so accidents do tend to go up during deer season,” said Travis Casper, acting hunter education coordinator for the N.C. Wildlife Resources Commission.
In the 2010-11 hunting season, there were some 240,000 licensed deer hunters in the state, said Dain Palmer, human dimensions biologist for the wildlife commission.
All hunters ages 16 and older are required to purchase a hunting license, and all new hunters are required to take a free hunter education course.
