On Saturday, Dec. 10, more than 230 children, many from foster homes and families in financial distress, were treated to a “rock star” Christmas party at the 3rd annual Christmas is for Kids Extravaganza.
Over 30,000 square feet at Waste Pro transformed into “Santa’s Southern Annex” complete with a huge Christmas tree, pictures with Santa, a Build-A-Bear workshop, bouncy castles, arts and crafts tables, a fire engine and entertainment throughout the evening.
Christmas is for Kids was created by Mix 96.5 as a community “barn raising” to host an event for local children in crisis that may not have a Christmas experience at all.
Mix 96.5 partnered with several local organizations including Big Brothers, Big Sisters of Western North Carolina, Caring for Children, Eblen Charities and the Baird Foundation to get names of the children and each child receives an invitation to the party from Santa.
Volunteers from the around the area gave their time to help staff the event and hundreds more contributed toys so every child gets a package of wrapped gifts from Santa at the end of the event. Extra toys and gift bags were taken to Caring for Children and Helpmate for those kids coming into the system in the days ahead.
Christmas is for Kids would not have been possible without the generosity of local companies like Paramount Kia of Asheville, which has is providing a Build-A-Bear for each child; BiLo that will provide dinner for the children and their families; and Waste Pro, which is donating space, vehicles, and staff for the party. Ultimate Ice Cream, Artista Cakes, STJ’s Inflatables, Premiere Sound and Light, Party Boulevard and so many more also have donated their time and resources to make this a memorable night for children.
