When Asheville Hardware moved from its old location on Biltmore Avenue to its larger location at 10 Buxton Ave in April 2010, the company saw an opportunity to retool a popular program it had offered for years at its old location: the Asheville Woodworking School. It's taken a year to get the space ready, but Scott Meek, director of the woodworking classes, says the new space is better suited to bringing in novice woodworkers.
The school offers classes for beginner and intermediate woodworking students, and it covers many different areas of woodworking — from the basics of working with hand tools to a week-long class in November at which students will build their own 14-foot-7-inch Fox Canoe. Most classes last one day however, and range in price from $60 to $200. Most offer students the chance to make and take home their own creations. The November canoe-building class will cost $750 plus $1,145 for materials. Check Asheville Hardware's website for a list of classes.
