The Spruce Pine Zoning Board approved a proposal by mining company Feldspar/Quartz Corp, according to concerned activist Amy Waller who tweeted her comments from the Jan. 3 board meeting. Last week, several residents in the Spruce Pine area raised an alarm on Facebook after receiving a letter from local engineering firm contracted by Feldspar Corporation informing them that the mining company has plans to use a large tract of land within Spruce Pines city limits.

Spruce Pine Zoning Bd met today to consider Quartz (Feldspar) Corp's rezoning request for waste disposal site.
Bd asked questions of Quartz (Feldspar) Corp reps; no public comment allowed.
Spruce Pine Zoning Bd: asked about possible downsides of rezoning, Quartz Corp rep said he couldn't think of any.
Bd unanimously approved recommendation for rezoning request to be considered by full Town Council.
Date of Town Council mtg to consider rezoning request not yet set. Public comment will be allowed.
