The Asheville-based WE DO campaign — where couples try to register for marriage licenses as a way of demanding an end to laws prohibiting same-sex marriage — is expanding to South Carolina. On Jan. 17-18, three LGBT couples will request licenses in Greenville, S.C. The move will take place in the days before the Jan. 21 Republican primary in the state.
The Campaign for Southern Equality, which coordinates the WE DO campaign, sent out the following announcement earlier today:

The WE DO campaign began last Oct. 3 in Asheville, as couples requested marriage licenses for two weeks, culminating in an Oct. 13 rally and civil disobedience. The CSE has plans to expand its efforts throughout the Southeast.

We are excited to announce that the WE DO Campaign is growing to South Carolina. On January 17 and 18, three LGBT couples will request marriage licenses in Greenville, knowing they will be denied but ready to express their full humanity and equality. This next stage of the WE DO Campaign will take place days before the South Carolina Primary; in this charged political climate, all of our actions will express love and empathy towards those who oppose our rights.
