About the Western Carolina Medical Society (WCMS)
The Western Carolina Medical Society is the physicians’ voice, advocating for the health of the medical profession, the health of the patient, and the health of the community.
The Buncombe County Medical Society was established in 1885 by area physicians. Since then, the society has carried out its mission of advocacy, creating the high quality of healthcare we now enjoy.
Regional expansion of the Medical Society in 2011 was the impetus behind our name change to the Western Carolina Medical Society. An innovator, collaborator and community partner, WCMS is committed to supporting and advocating for physicians across Western North Carolina.
About WCMS Project Access™
Project Access™ provides a coordinated system for helping low-income, uninsured people get the care they need in an efficient and cost effective way. The Project Access network of providers served over 4,000 low-income, uninsured patients at a value of $14 million last year. As unemployment and insurance costs rise, the numbers of uninsured continue to climb.
