Western N.C.-based pianist Kimberly Cann will perform a concert featuring works by Debussy, Liszt, Beethoven and the 20th Century composer Margaret Bonds, who is, according to a press release, "one of the first black classical performers and composers to gain recognition in the U.S." The concert at 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 18 in UNC Asheville’s Lipinsky Auditorium.
Cann has a master’s degree from the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, N.Y. She's a native of the West Indies but moved to Fletcher when she was young. According to press she "returned to the islands as an adult to serve as Visiting Professor of Music and Artist-in-Residence at the Northern Caribbean University in Jamaica." These days she serves as the Vice President of the Asheville Area Piano Forum, is a member of the WCQS Community Advisory Board and is on the Board of Directors of the Asheville Symphony Orchestra.
