The Buncombe County school district will consider restrictions on a range religious activities — from chaplains leading prayer with football teams to choral groups singing Christian hymns at Christmas concerts.
Criticism that followed an intermediate school’s decision to allow Bibles to be made available for students to pick up and take home forced the review, school district officials said.
The idea is to get a clear picture on where the courts stand on such issues and make sure school system employees know what’s allowed and what’s not, said Bob Rhinehart, chairman of the Buncombe County Board of Education.
“Our attorneys are working on some possible agenda items for us to look at, as far as updating our policies,” Rhinehart said. “This is first I’ve heard of prayers before events or the singing of spiritual songs. I’ve never looked into that and don’t know where the courts stand.”
The board will have a workshop Jan. 25, and Rhinehart said these issues likely would be added to the meeting for discussion.Read the full article
