According to the Asheville Citizen-Times, firefighter Jay Bettencourt has been recognized as firefighter of the year by the Western North Carolina Firefighter's Association, mainly for his heroic effort to save his Captain and friend, Jeff Bowen during last summer's fatal arson fire.
