ASHEVILLE, NC (February 2, 2012) Asheville School’s Students for Environmental Awareness (SEA) club has asked students and faculty members to participate in the 2012 Green Cup National Energy Challenge from January 18 through February 15.
According to their website, the Green Cup Challenge invites all schools to measure and reduce electricity use and Greenhouse Gas emissions, and supports greening efforts including recycling and water conservation. The Challenge empowers students and builds community, while raising awareness about climate change and the importance of resource conservation. (greencupchallenge.net)
SEA’s faculty mentor Ed Maggart is reporting Asheville School’s kilowatt-hours weekly. There are 115 other schools participating nationwide, five of which are in our region.
“Even when the GCC is over, we hope that people will begin to realize that conserving energy, with just a few small changes, can change the way our school runs. We hope that by saving energy, we can make people aware of the necessary changes we all should be making in our daily lives,” said Shannon.
SEA vice-president Jonathon George (Junior from Lexington, KY) also hopes participants will continue to conserve electricity long after the competition is over. The goal of SEA is to reach out to the community and help inspire others.
