City may demolish old garage, building across from Basilica and U.S. Cellular Center

City officials say they may demolish an old garage and a former restaurant building across from the Basilica of St. Lawrence and the U.S. Cellular Center (the recently renamed Asheville Civic Center), the Asheville Citizen-Times reports. In light of the property's possible sale to a hotel developer, the local diocese has offered to buy the property, which includes a corner parking lot:

City Transportation Director Ken Putnam said the move would be designed to simply make better use of the property before its ultimate use is decided.

City officials and area residents are debating what, if anything, should be built on the property. ... The city will have to decide this spring whether it makes sense to foot the cost of the project — which Putnam said could be as much as $450,000 — when something else might be located on the site in a few years, he said.
