Beth Castro, 30, of Asheville, NC, is committed to fighting multiple sclerosis. She currently is planning to participate in her second year of Walk MS, which raises money for the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. The Asheville Walk event will be held April 21, 2012, at Carrier Park. The walk is a 1 mile route, beginning at 9:00 a.m., with registration at 8:00 a.m.
Castro started participating in Walk MS in memory of her father, who passed away in 2007 from complications with MS, an unpredictable, often disabling disease of the central nervous system for which there is no cure. “I joined the walk this year because in addition to it being a dear cause to me since my dad had MS, I found out that I too am living with it,” says Castro.
“My husband and I decided we wanted to participate in MS Walk this year and that it will become an annual event for us,” Castro said. “We want to do what we can to raise money for the cause and bring awareness to people about MS.
Participants are encouraged to raise funds in support of the MS Society in addition to walking on the day of the event. Castro knows with support it is possible, even in a challenging economy.
“Facebook has been helpful for getting the word out and making it an easy way for people to donate,” Castro said. “That is definitely a strategy I would recommend as part of effective fundraising.”
