Prichard Park in downtown Asheville, NC
2:00-4:00 P.M.
SAFE Carolinas, the Safe Alternatives for Future Energy in the Carolinas, will join communities around the world in remembering the 1st anniversary of the Fukushima nuclear reactor meltdowns. This catastrophic event occurred on March 11, 2011, in northeastern Japan following a devastating earthquake and resulting tsunami and spread deadly radiation around the globe. Speakers will include Mary Olson of the Nuclear Information and Resource Service (NIRS) and Laura Sorenson, SAFE Carolinas organizer. The Sahara Peace Choir will perform and participants will be led in a commemoration to honor the victims of this tragedy. Information will be disseminated regarding the proposed Gaffney, South Carolina, nuclear reactors which would be a mere 60 miles from Asheville if constructed. A march in downtown Asheville will follow the program to bring attention to current nuclear power issues. The public is invited to attend and participate in these events.
