This year Xpress will be covering SXSW's music week (and, specifically, Asheville bands) in Austin, Tex. Want to follow along? Go here, or click the MX SXSW link in the top left corner of our website. We'll be there Wednesday-Saturday, March 14-17.
Here's who's performing:
• River Whyless heads off the Paper Garden showcase at Uncorked, Wednesday at 3 p.m.
• Moog Music hosts a showcase with Austin synth store Switched On, and Neon Indian's Static Tongues label. That's on Thursday at Barbarella with SoftMetals, Slugbug, Airbird, Boan, Tense, Silent Diane and Neon Indian. Airbird is the solo project of Ford & Lopatin's Joel Ford, who recently moved the Asheville.
• EAR PWR (Devin Booze and Sarah Reynolds) returns as an official SXSW showcasing band, playing Thursday, 8 p.m. at 512 Rooftop.
Here's a kind of bouncy video from their performance in Austin last year:
• Asheville-based drummer James Dedakis performs with Chapel Hill's Fan Modine at the Blurt!/Dogfish Head/Austin360-hosted Industry of Music, A Transatlantic Rock Affair. That party spans three days. Three days!
• Drunken Prayer (Morgan Geer) performs at a showcase held by Austin Roadhouse Records on Friday.
We'll also try to catch Asheville-turned-Austin indie-pop act The Baker Family band on Saturday at Hole in the Wall.
