Two of the region’s iconic landmarks, the Appalachian Trail and Blue Ridge Parkway, will be the subject of the next session in the “Celebrating Life in the Mountains” series at UNC Asheville’s N.C. Center for Creative Retirement. This event is free and open to the public, at 7 p.m. Tuesday, April 17, in the Manheimer Room at UNC Asheville’s Reuter Center.
Julie Jenkins, community program manager for the Appalachian Trail Conservancy, will discuss the history of the trail and the opportunities it has to offer casual as well as serious hikers. One of the longest footpaths in the world, the Appalachian Trail attracts more than 2 million hikers each year.
Carolyn Ward, chief executive officer of the Blue Ridge Parkway Foundation, will give an overview of the region’s most famous road and its heritage. The 469-mile Blue Ridge Parkway, which wraps around Asheville, is one of America’s most scenic roadways, stretching from the Great Smoky Mountains to Shenandoah National Park in Virginia.
