Every Saturday, SonRise Community Outreach serves the hungry breakfast from 7:30 a.m.-9:30 a.m. However, they don't want it to feel like a soup kitchen. They want it to feel like a restaurant, complete with menus, waitresses and, most importantly, good service.
"For us, this is how we connect. If people are just going through lines, sitting down and busing their own tables, we have very little people-to-people contact. This way, we're circulating, pouring coffee, getting them juice, asking them if they would like seconds, or more juice or more coffee. It's fun and not only does it provide a relationship-building opportunity, it allows us to have more volunteer opportunities," says Tricia Markoff, one of the founders of this breakfast service.
They rotate through eight different menus and generally offer a protein, fruit, eggs, and at least one other option like pancakes, biscuits and gravy, or french toast.
SonRise Community Outreach serves between 100-125 people every Saturday. The organization started in November by serving breakfast twice a month, but since January, they have been serving every Saturday.
SonRise Community Outreach is located next to David's Autohouse at 1543-C Patton Ave in West Asheville.
