A Century Later, Allan Wolf Brings “Voices from the Titanic” to Life at UNC Asheville

One-hundred years to the day that the Titanic sank, Asheville writer Allan Wolf will present a reader’s theater presentation of his award-winning book, “The Watch That Ends the Night: Voices from the Titanic” at 4 p.m. Sunday, April 15, in UNC Asheville’s Karpen Hall, Laurel Forum. This presentation, which will include related music, visual slides, and tea and pastries reminiscent of tea time on the Titanic, is free and open to the public.

Wolf’s poetic novel tells the story of the sinking of the Titanic through 24 voices, including passengers, the ship’s captain, a member of the orchestra, a rat on board the ship, and the iceberg itself. At Sunday’s presentation, UNC Asheville students will read the parts of some of these characters.

A resident of Asheville, Wolf travels widely, offering poetry in more than 100 performances and presentations a year. He is a National Sonnet Slam champion and has performed with the national touring troupe, Poetry Alive! and with The Dead Poets, a trio that sets classic poems to music.

“The Watch That Ends the Night: Voices from the Titanic” (Candlewick Press, 2011) received the Claudia Lewis Poetry Award from Bank Street College and was voted one of the best books of the year by the American Library Association.

Wolf’s presentation is sponsored by the Arts and Ideas Program at UNC Asheville. For more information, please contact Laura Bond at 828/232-2992 or lbond@unca.edu.
