Bele Chere was easily recognizable when she came into the world in 1979. She was born of a desire to get people into downtown Asheville, then a desolate locale in severe need of a little excitement. She was all about boosting local businesses. ...

In 2007, the city-run festival was downscaled as officials, and residents, recognized something was amiss. Bele Chere's budget was cut, her footprint across downtown was reduced, and a new emphasis was placed on highlighting local food, music, art and beer.
