Counties pay top salaries, bonuses to keep top managers

Here's an excerpt from the Asheville Citizen-TImes article:

When it comes to county managers and compensation, mountain counties essentially have to pay to play — and throw in some bonuses or other “nonsalary compensation” to keep top talent.

The three largest Western North Carolina counties by population offer these compensation packages to their top managers:

• Buncombe County Manager Wanda Greene collects $10,744 in longevity pay in addition to her $214,822 salary, as well as an 8 percent contribution to her 401(k) retirement plan.

• Haywood County Manager Marty Stamey has a base pay of $127,741 and receives longevity pay of 2.5 percent of that salary, or an additional $3,193. He also receives a travel allowance of $600 per month.

• Henderson County Manager Steve Wyatt collects an $11,925 retention bonus in addition to his $159,000 annual salary, as well as a travel allowance of $650 a month.Read the full article
