The largest earthquake ever recorded in North and South Carolina occurred in 1916; it was a magnitude 5.1 quake. The Asheville Citizen-Times reports that a 1.7-magnitude quake occurred May 31 in the same area.

No doubt about it, a quake- and you immediately knew what was happening. I was between Dillsboro and Franklin, epicenter must have been close.
