" Fire chiefs and some town officials are opposing a proposed downtown tax district, saying it would drain important money from rural fire stations and small municipalities," the Asheville Citizen-Times' Joel Burgess reports. "District proponents, though, say fire departments and other sales tax recipients will actually get more money because of downtown improvements."
