Obamacare Mandate Ruled To Be A “Tax” By Supreme Court, Vance Patterson Responds With Strategy For Repeal In Congress
MORGANTON, NC-- North Carolina 11th district Congressional candidate Vance Patterson responded to today's decision from the U.S. Supreme Court on the 2010 health care bill commonly known as “Obamacare.” The decision, which upheld the law under the premise that it is actually a tax, rather than a coercion to purchase a product as the plaintiff suggested, surprised many who expected Chief Justice John Roberts to side with conservatives. The decision will likely return the health care bill to the center of the 2012 election cycle, with Democrats hailing the decision as a victory for their flagship legislation, and Republicans running on the hope of repeal through the legislative process.
“I commend the Supreme Court, at least, for confirming what most Americans know to be true. Obamacare is the largest tax increase ever levied against the middle class and business owners, and it is for that reason that Chief Justice Roberts sided with the Democrats in asserting that Congress does in fact have the authority to levy taxes,” said Patterson. “Now that the Supreme Court has confirmed that President Obama's most significant piece of legislation is fact an economy-stifling, job-killing, record-setting tax increase, every American with even a bit of common sense should be doing everything he or she can to elect a House, Senate, and new President that will repeal this massive Obamacare tax before its most burdensome provisions go into effect. It is now more clear than ever why the most stifling parts of the bill are set to trigger in 2014, well after the 2012 elections.”
“With my election to the House in November, I will defend the jobs and lives of Western North Carolinians by working to support a full repeal of this law. While I do not disagree that Obamacare is a tax, I am in agreement with the four dissenting Supreme Court justices that Obamacare should have been struck down in its entirety, and remain optimistic that it will be struck down following November's elections. Anything less spells the end of America's world leading healthcare system, and likely the end of America's position as the world's superpower, economic or otherwise.”

If Mr. Vance wishes to tilt at windmills in deference to his Tea Party ideology, then fine. However, he should at least try to use actual facts instead of easily discredited nonsense to bolster his case. According to a World Health Organization study in 2010 (the last year of such a thorough review), the United States is #1 in expenditures per capita on health care, yet ranks #37 in all outcomes measured.
The only thing "world leading" about it is that the U.S. health care system leads the world in insuring private companies continue to enrich themselves at the expense of the average American's money and health.

What would the GOP even talk about if they werent spending the last (and next) 4 years calling a handout to the insurance industry 'socialism'?
NDAA? Patriot Acts? Drone strikes on countries we are not at war with?

The GOP has not offered anything at all; not during the Bush years, including the time they held both Houses of Congress. Nada. They offer nothing now but discredited sound bites. Wait, I take it back; Maryland Governor Martin O'Malley correctly "attacked their hypocrisy in objecting to government involvement in health care while simultaneously implementing hundreds of new restrictive anti-abortion laws in state houses across the country.
“The only health care mandate they can embrace are transvaginal probes for women,” he said.
Vance and his fellow Tea Party types, along with other conservative types, are full of bluster about how they're going to "repeal Obamacare." I'll take bets that the public will not allow these corporate lackeys to return to the status quo. It's all about placating their extremist base and saving face. And trying to raise money.

Oh yes, he who endorsed the godfather of Obamacare, Romney, for president, much to the ire of other Tea Party types.
Maybe Rand (I wonder where the name came from?) Paul doesn't subscribe to the concept of judicial review as the final arbiter of what is constitutional (since 1803), but his whining doesn't change a thing. It just makes him look like the other right-wingers: sore losers.
