U.S. Forest Service fights 25-acre wildfire near Grandfather Mountain

PRESS RELEASE:

The U.S. Forest Service, North Carolina Forest Service and Collettsville Fire Department are suppressing a 25-acre wildfire in the Grandfather Ranger District, Pisgah National Forest. The wildfire is located near Sand Mountain in Caldwell County, about three miles north of the Town of Collettsville. The fire is 40 percent contained.

Lightning ignited the wildfire that began Friday, July 6.

Nearly all of the fire is on Forest Service land, which is adjacent to private land. No structures are threatened or damaged. No injuries have been reported.

Approximately 30 firefighters are establishing fire lines around the perimeter to contain the fire.

Forest Service officials say local residents can expect to see smoke for a week or more as the wildfire is extinguished.
