Local musician Marshall Pyle (aka Granpappy, aka GP) is a longtime Asheville resident, former contributor to GFE and frontman of Granpappy & the Bruthaship. Pyle is also a visual artist (he's on board to create the poster art for LAAFF this year; recent work also includes the poster for Secret B-Sides' Grey Eagle show) and has a new show — Visual Transmission Frum Thrawz Wobl set to open at Rosetta's Kitchen on Sunday, July 15.

Thrawz Wobl, as Pyle explains, is a planet that he and his friends conceived of in high school. His art work uses psychedelic, spiritual and socio-political imagery and language as a jumping-off point to explore intellectual freedom and push boundaries of color, line and creativity. Pieces on exhibit are mostly new works, but a few date back well over a decade (with recent revisions).

The opening runs from 6-10 p.m. with music by DJ Joynerd. Rosetta's is not open for food service at that time, but with art, music and good company, who needs food anyway? (Okay, if you do need a peanut butter tofu fix, Rosetta's does serve until 3 p.m. on Sundays.)

Here, Pyle talks to Xpress about music, Asheville and art. The music on the video is from Pyle's forthcoming solo album.
