A complex mix of state and federal laws govern North Carolina unions: The state's right-to-work law prohibits mandatory union membership. But according to the National Labor Relations Board, federal law gives employees the right to:

• Organize a union to negotiate wages, hours and other employment terms.
• Form, join or assist a union.
• Bargain collectively.
• Discuss wages, benefits, other employment conditions and/or union organizing with co-workers or a union.
• Collectively raise work-related complaints with an employer or government agency and seek help from a union.
• Strike and picket, with certain restrictions.
• Choose not to join or remain in a union.
