A female soldier in a combat zone is more likely to be raped by a fellow soldier than killed by enemy fire, according to the film The Invisible War. This Sundance Film Festival award-winning documentary examines one of "America's most shameful and best kept secrets: the epidemic of rape within the U.S. military."
On Thursday, Sept. 6 and Saturday, Sept. 8, the documentary will be screened at the Fine Arts Theatre to benefit the The Steadfast House, a female homeless veterans shelter in Asheville. Local veteran Mary Joan Dickson organized the event. She is a survivor of military sexual trauma and was interviewed in the film. Her personal experience and dedication to the cause brings the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan closer to home.
Thursday's screening starts at 7 p.m. and Saturday's showing begins at 10 a.m. An $8 donation is suggested.
