Moffitt earns national small business group endorsement

Here’s the press release from the Tim Moffitt campaign. Moffitt is facing a challenge this year from Democrat Jane Whilden.

ASHEVILLE – Representative Tim Moffitt (R – Buncombe) has received the endorsement of the National Federation of Independent Businesses, North Carolina’s leading small business association. The endorsement was made by NFIB/North Carolina SAFE (Save America’s Free Enterprise) Trust, which is comprised exclusively of NFIB members.

“Rep. Moffitt understands the challenges facing the state’s small, family businesses and is the clear choice in House District 116,” said Gregg Thompson, state director of NFIB/North Carolina. “We believe Rep. Moffitt will continue to take a fiscally responsible approach to managing state government and support legislation that helps our small businesses grow and create jobs and puts the state back on the pathway to success.”

“I’m honored to receive this endorsement,” Moffitt said. “I think it proves that a lot of the hard work we put in during the last session of the General Assembly is starting to pay off for our local small businesses here in Buncombe County and across the state.”

Moffitt was directly involved in the process that helped Linamar, a mechanical parts manufacturer, open operations in south Asheville and crafted legislation leading to the future opening of New Belgium Brewery in the River Arts District in Asheville and Sierra Nevada Brewery in Mills River adjacent to the Asheville Airport.

NFIB is the nation’s leading small business association, with offices in each of the 50 states. Since 1943, the nonprofit, nonpartisan organization has given small and independent business owners a voice in shaping the public policy issues that affect their businesses. Representative Moffitt is running for reelection in North Carolina’s 116th House District, which encompasses most of western and southern Buncombe County. He was first elected in 2010.

WASHINGTON — The same group that exposed the previously little-known American Legislative Exchange Council (ALEC) as a dominant force advancing corporate interests at the state level has now turned its sights on exposing the National Federation of Independent Business (NFIB).

NFIB is hardly operating in near-secrecy, like ALEC was. The organization, which describes itself as “the voice of small business,” was the lead plaintiff in the ultimately unsuccessful lawsuit against the Affordable Care Act, taking it to the Supreme Court.

The left-leaning Center for Media and Democracy has posted on NFIBexposed.org, its new website, a study that reveals how consistently the NFIB lobbies on issues that favor large corporate interests rather than small-business interests; its thoroughly partisan agenda; and the millions it receives in secret contributions from groups associated with Karl Rove and the Koch Brothers.

“I think that this new site helps expose the fact that the National Federation of Independent Business is not so independent, and it certainly is not acting as the voice of small business,” said Lisa Graves, the center’s director.

But Jean Card, NFIB’s vice president for communications, lashed out at the new website Wednesday. In an emailed statement to The Huffington Post, she wrote: “It is an insult to small-business owners across the country for another organization, with no connection to small business whatsoever, to imply that job creators don’t know what’s best for themselves.”http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2012/09/26/nfib-exposed_n_1917262.html?utm_hp_ref=mostpopular
