Rory Scovel: Expect the unexpected

Rory Scovel likes to keep things fresh. The South Carolina native (now based in L.A.) began his journey into stand-up by studying improv, and it shows shows in his adaptable performance style.

Although he's a relatively frequent visitor to Asheville (Scovel performed at Lexington Avenue Brewery in June; past shows included Athena's and The Magnetic Field), you're almost guaranteed to see something entirely different with each set. Scovel embraces the unexpected, slipping in and out of characters unannounced, rewriting jokes onstage, improvising with the audience and relishing in those uncomfortable moments as a performer. He's even compared his style to the infamously free-form sets of iconic jam rockers Phish.

The material is generally observational, but not in the concise, one-liner style of comedians like Jerry Seinfeld. Scovel is more of a storyteller, entertaining with experiences rather than word play. He's not afraid to go on a rambling narrative or delve into personal places, and that fearless approach to performing is one reason Scovel has garnered praise from fellow comedians and critics alike.

Scovel performs at The LAB on Tuesday, Oct. 16. 9 p.m. $10.
