Float beyond coal protest at Lake Julian

Around 70 people took to the windy waters of Lake Julian Sunday afternoon Oct. 14 to bring attention to the issue of coal-fired power plants like the one on the south shore of the lake.

Sponsoring groups included Western North Carolina Alliance, Sierra Club, French Broad Riverkeeper, Watauga Riverkeeper, and SouthWings. The groups are trying to encourage Duke Energy to move beyond coal and utilize cleaner forms of energy.

Other than the wind, which turned the large banner in to a sail propelling the rafted canoes and kayaks before a stiff south blow, the protest was uneventful.
