"Dent May is going on tour, from Mississippi to the moon," says the Facebook invite for the Dent May, Alligator Indian and Sin Kitty show at Emerald Lounge on Monday, Oct. 22. (Show time is 9 p.m., cover is $5.)
Actually, May's tour takes him (ultimately) to Nashville. Not quite the moon. But there is something kind of cosmic about Mississippi native May. His website has sparkly text. His music career was inspired by Serge Gainsbourg and Lee Hazlewood — so reported Spacelab, who also suggested that May "might be a musical genius posing as a gadfly about town posing as a musical genius. And there's something about him — his '70s-era haircut? his soft-focus photos? his unabashedly poppy songs? — that seems of another era. But also of this era, in a joyfully off-kilter way.
Listen to "Best Friend":
May's debut LP was The Good Feeling Music of Dent May & His Magnificent Ukulele; latest album, Do Things, was released by Animal Collective's label, Paw Tracks, on June 12. He still "balances saccharine pop sincerity and campy affectation," as his bio puts it.
