Beneath the surface of Asheville's old-timey, roots-loving veneer lies a bustling experimental music scene. Noisey, droney and psychedelic, these artists, more often than not, perform in basements, living rooms, warehouses and non-traditional venues. But this weekend, Asheville's "outliers" are taking to downtown for the third installation of Foogmess, our very own DIY drone festival.
Foogmess was originally billed as a "local alternative to the very expensive, very not locally focused Moogfest," going head-to-head with the much larger, nationally publicized festival the last weekend in October. This year, however, Foogmess opted for the weekend before Moogfest, due, perhaps, to the response its received the previous two years. Foogmess is no longer a cheap, local alternative to Moogfest; it's an experience all its own.
The lineup includes an eclectic mix of more than two dozen experimental performers (local and national), ranging from the booming, fuzzy psychedelia of Soft Opening to the ethereal field recordings of Cumulus. Other performers include Feast of the Epiphany, Lazy Magnet, Difference Clouds and Ahleuchatistas' Shane Perlowin and many, many more.
Though Foogmess kickedoff last night, there's still two days and 17 sets left to catch. The festival resumes tonight with more than seven hours of music at Apothecary, 39-B South Market St., with Sunday's performances to be held at Blackout Effectors, 98 North Lexington Ave.
Both evenings kick off at 6 p.m. $5. Full schedule and further info available here.
