West Asheville metal artist (and two-time Best Of WNC winner) Stephan Bonitz does things in a big way. His raw materials are cast-off steel plates from industry. Think ship bulkheads, or big steel braces.

His sculptures routinely require a forklift (or more) to move around his shop when in progress. Finished pieces are sometimes immense, with their installation requiring cranes, removing portions of doors or windows and lots of coordination.

On Friday, Nov. 16, early in the morning, a new piece, "Face in the Garden," was carefully moved into the Woolworth Walk gallery. "As far as I know, this is the tallest, heaviest piece I have put in here," said Bonitz.

Once inside, the logistics of tipping the piece into place were calculated.

Straps kept the heavy sculpture from crashing into the wall.
