FROM THE YWCA
Heart Disease is often thought of as a man’s disease, but since 1984 more women than men have died each year from heart disease and the gap between men and women’s survival continues to widen. February is Heart Month and a perfect time to focus on keeping your heart healthy and strong. In particular, Friday February 4 is Go Red Day, a national day of awareness about women’s heart health: http://www.goredforwomen.org.
As part of Red Day, on Friday, February 4th from 9:00 am until 12:00 pm, the YWCA, located at 185 S. French Broad Avenue, will be offering free blood pressure screenings.
Then from 12:00 – 1:00 pm, Cathy Hohenstein, a registered dietitian from Buncombe County Cooperative Extension will lead a Lunch-and-Learn program. The focus will be on heart disease, some specific concerns women may have, and ways to cook and eat healthy as well as other ways to prevent and control cardiovascular diseases. From fish and fish oil supplements to exercises that strengthen our most important muscle, she’ll share the most recent recommendations. Tickle your taste buds with a healthy snack and information on ingredient substitutions. Learn more about the DASH diet and how it fits into a healthy lifestyle. So, bring your lunch and join us at the YWCA and leave motivated to Give Your Heart a Healthy Beat! This program is free and open to the public.
During the afternoon on February 4th, the YWCA will be giving members of Club W: The YWCA Health & Fitness Center heart-healthy snacks and recipes.
