State investigates farm waste spill in French Broad River, Asheville CItizen-Times reports

A Fletcher dairy farm with a history of past environmental violations is under investigation by the state for what officials call a major spill of raw animal waste into a popular section of the French Broad River.

N.C. Division of Water Quality inspectors found waste entering the river from an overflowing waste storage pond at Taproot Dairy Farm at a rate of about 11,000 gallons an hour.

Inspectors went to the farm on Butler Bridge Road, south of Asheville in the edge of Henderson County, on Tuesday after being notified of the problem by French Broad Riverkeeper Hartwell Carson.Read the full article
