The holidays are the perfect time to take a drive out of town and explore the outer reaches of our region. Imagine winding roads, pine trees and maybe even a few snowflakes. But before you gas up the car, you need a destination.

The town of Dillsboro is a winter wonderland this time of year. 2,500 candles line the streets, each one placed in a white bag designed to light up downtown. This Scandinavian tradition has been expanded to include sing-a-longs, horse and carriage rides and carolers. Stores will be open late to serve warm cider and homemade goodies.

All that's needed to complete the magic is a few inches of snow. Luckily, Cullowhee-based weather guru Preston Jacobsen will blow artificial snow so that kids can build snowmen and make snow angels. Santa and Mrs. Claus will set up shop in the Town Hall to accept Christmas wishes from kids of all ages.

The Dillsboro Festival of Lights and Luminaries will be held Friday, Dec. 7 and Saturday, Dec. 8, as well as the weekend of Dec. 14-15. The fun starts at dusk and runs until 9 p.m. Free. Info:www.visitdillsboro.com or (800) 962-1911.
