"The celebration and season of Kwanzaa is a deeply meaningful and special time of remembrance, reflection and recommitment for us as a people throughout the world African community," says Dr. Maulana Karenga, the creator of Kwanzaa on the official Kwanzaa website. "It is a time of appreciative remembrance of our ancestors, great and ordinary, of the models of human excellence, achievement and possibility they offer, and of the enduring legacy of the good they left in the world."

Learn more about the holiday and join in a celebration at a special local event led by writer, educator and story medicine leader Meta Commerse. "We will celebrate Kwanzaa for the first time at Jubilee this year. We will share in the history, culture and observance of Kwanzaa together." says a press release for the celebration, which takes place at Jubilee! (46 Wall St.) on Thursday, Dec. 27 at 7 p.m. By donation to feed the hungry.
