The Buncombe County Board of Commissioners will join other commissioners from across Western North Carolina in Asheville for a two day series of workshops organized by the UNC School of Government, Jan. 9–10.
Experts from the school will teach participants a variety of courses, including those intended to clarify state laws governing what county boards can and can't do, ethics rules, and budgeting. One of the workshops deals with a local hotbutton issue and is titled "Water and Economically Vibrant Communities: What Every Local Leader Needs to Know."
All of the commissioners from Buncombe County are planning to attend. All of the candidates were also invited from District 2, including Democrat Ellen Frost and Republican Christina Kelley G. Merrill. Republican Mike Fryar is scheduled to be sworn in as the winner of a four year term in District 2 later on the evening of Jan. 9. A hand count of all the ballots showed Frost topping Merrill for the second District 2 seat by 18 votes. However, the board of elections has not certified her as the winner while Merrill continues a legal push to discount some of the ballots of Warren Wilson residents from the results.
The commissioners will meet from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day at the DoubleTree Hotel in Biltmore, located at 115 Hendersonville Rd. More information is available from the school here.
