The temperature may be warming up, but the lush green veggies of summer are still a ways off. If you're dreaming of getting your hands dirty, team up with the Beaverdam Community Garden for a breath of spring air.
The community garden, located at the YMCA on the corner of Beaverdam Road and Kimberly Avenue, is gearing up for its next season. "Young fruit trees and shrubs are settling in for their first or second winter, raised beds are covered with peas and clover to replenish themselves after a productive growing season and a newly planted living willow tunnel is ready to spring into growth in the spring," reports organizer Justin Holt.
Two years ago, elementary school students, YMCA staff and community volunteers of all kinds came together to make the garden a reality. A tangle of gangly tomatoes were transformed into a edible wonderland, complete with fruit trees and a wide variety of produce.
Join the garden's efforts at the Beaverdam Community Garden's first meeting of the year. Community members are encouraged to get involved and develop plans for the spring. "Bring a friend, a neighbor, a grandchild, and let's talk about how we can garden and grow together!"
The meeting will take place on Tuesday, Jan. 15 at 6 p.m. at the Beaverdam YMCA, 201 Beaverdam Road. Free to attend. Info: jholt@ymcawnc.org or (845) 401 3700.
