Sometimes veggies get all the glory, but that doesn't mean that fruit and nuts should fall by the wayside. With a little vision and long-range planning, fruit trees can bring home the bounty for years to come. From hazelnuts to persimmons, a wide range of fruit and nuts grow in this region and the Buncombe Fruit and Nut Club celebrates them all.

On Sunday, Feb. 24 at 11am, the group will host a public Orchard Day. Everyone is invited to the outdoor area of the Montford Recreation Center, 34 Pearson Drive, to take care of more than two dozen mature trees, learn about their virtues and "generally goof off."

As if you need more incentive, they'll be serving Hickory Nut Gap hot dogs and playing games that are "nut to be missed." Bring a wheelbarrow, pitchfork, digging fork, shovel, pruners, hammer and any other tools you have on hand. Don't forget gloves and drinking water.
