Pisgah Legal focuses on the essentials; the nonprofit offers free legal assistance to low-income people with housing, health-care and safety needs.

True to form, Pisgah Legal wants to connect with Asheville over an essential part of most mornings — a cup of coffee. Java for Justice gets the word out about the firm’s services while raising money to support the 35-year-old group. On Friday, March 1, Pisgah Legal ambassadors will take to 13 Asheville coffee shops from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. to answer questions and accept donations.

“It’s more of a community-awareness event,” says Katie Russell Miller, Pisgah Legal’s director of community engagement. “Coffee shops are a relaxed atmosphere for us to hang out and let people know we’re here.”

City Bakery will donate a portion of its March bread sales to the group. They’ll also serve a special Pisgah Legal blend, which Dynamite Roasting created for the event. “We’re told it’s bold and velvety,” Miller says.
