The National Weather Service issued a Winter Storm Watch for much of Western North Carolina, including Buncombe County, predicting snow Tuesday evening into Wednesday.
The service expects around 2 inches of snow to fall in Asheville, with much more in the higher elevations north and west of town. It warns that the storm is expected to create potentially dangerous travel conditions throughout the region.
A recent series of fronts generated a few days of flurries in Asheville, but accumulations were isolated to the higher ridges outside of town.
It's been 779 days since the official measuring station at the Asheville Regional Airport reported any significant snowfall, according to a recent story in the Washington Post. Comparing Asheville's snow drought to one in D.C., the paper noted that this is the longest time span without snow since records starting being kept at the local airport in 1964.
UPDATE: March 5 at 11:45 AM: The National Weather Service has changed its alert slighting, going from a "Winter Storm Watch" yesterday, to a "Winter Weather Advisory" today. The service is still predicting 1 to 2 inches of snow in Asheville, with hazardous travel conditions as a result.
