During these trying economic times, some attorneys have partnered with Legal Aid of North Carolina's Sylva Office to provide pro bono (free) legal services to the disadvantaged in Western North Carolina. Sylvia King Kochler, an attorney who has recently retired as a Partner at Hunton & Williams in Atlanta, devotes much of her time to helping victims of domestic violence in Macon County. Domestic abuse is an epidemic whose victims deserve a strong advocate in the courtroom, even if they cannot afford to hire a private attorney. Kochler is an incredible advocate who over the past six years has helped over 300 victims escape domestic violence.
Another outstanding local attorney, Rod Kight (of Kight Law Office, Sylva and Asheville), says: "It is our responsibility as attorneys to give back to the community if we can." Kight, who specializes in bankruptcy, has given back tremendously by partnering with Legal Aid on forty pro bono cases since 2005. Kight is an incredible example of the positive impact one individual can have on his community.
Legal Aid of North Carolina's Sylva Office has been ensuring justice for low-income families in NC's seven western-most counties for more than thirty-five years. In order to provide assistance to as many low-income North Carolinians as possible, Legal Aid recruits private attorneys to assist in their areas of expertise.
We greatly appreciate the contributions of all of the generous attorneys who have worked with our office to help the underserved. THANK YOU!
