With Borders/Waldenbooks closing hundreds of its chain stores, it may seem unlikely that small booksellers can make it in this competitive world. ... Emphasis on community business and the local brand may be the reason the number of independent bookstores has increased in the past few years, according to the American Booksellers Association.

Since 2009, the number of stores starting memberships with the ABA has gone up around 7 percent.
