Students in several Buncombe County Schools will have the opportunity to hula hoop after school with the local outreach organization Hooping Hearts. Teaming up with the YMCA’s Youth Fit for Life program, Evergreen Community Charter School, and Smart Start of Buncombe County, Hooping Hearts will extend hooping beyond Pritchard Park and into the lives of kids who may not have the opportunity to get to the jams or festivals where hooping is usually found.
Caitlin Gliedman, founder of Hooping Hearts, designed curriculum using the North Carolina Standard Course of Studies to create an after school program that promotes cardiovascular and emotional heart health using a hula hoop. Motivated by the rising rates of obesity in North Carolina’s children, the decreasing time allotted for physical activity during school hours, and her personal love for hoop dancing, Caitlin began building hoops and getting them into the hands of kids.
“When I first started bringing hoops into schools students took to them immediately. I understood their excitement, because I too, feel the excitement when I hoop. Hooping has changed my life physically and emotionally. I felt compelled to share that experience with others.” states Caitlin, also known as Miss G to her students. Starting in September, Hooping Hearts will be providing after school hoop classes four days a week in various schools across Buncombe County.
Caitlin Gliedman, founder of Hooping Hearts, is a licensed Elementary, Early Childhood, and English as a Second Language Teacher. In the past year she has also become a certified personal trainer and fitness instructor, combining her love for children and healthy living. Since the start of 2011, Hooping Hearts has worked and volunteered with several local businesses such as The YMCA of WNC, Eliada Homes, Smart Start of Buncombe County, Asheville City Schools, Evergreen Community Charter School, and The Grove Park Inn Resort and Spa.
