First you should know that you can download the "Deep Oblivion" MP3 for free at David Lowery's website. And then you should know that the track is actually Lowery's solo work because "After 27 years i have decided it is time for a solo album," the musician reports. That album, The Palace Guards will be released on Tuesday, Feb. 1 and on Wednesday, Feb. 2, he'll play an in-store show at Harvest Records. More on that in a moment.

The solo album does not spell the end of Lowery's other long-term projects, Camper Van Beethoven and Cracker. (By the way, Cracker played Bele Chere two summers ago.)

This is what Harvest Records wrote about the upcoming album in its newsletter:
"After years of helping steer the lauded and eclectic careers of both of his bands, Cracker and Camper Van Beethoven, co-founder and front man David Lowery has seen fit to present a collection of songs recorded apart from those iconic indie & alternative rock entities. Stopping short of calling it a solo record, Lowery has collaborated with a handful of trusted musical cohorts associated with his Richmond, VA-based studio, Sound of Music - an inner circle that Lowery has relied on for over 17 years and who’ve been instrumental in helping create the sounds heard on this album as well as past projects."

This is what Lowery has to say about being David Lowery: "I know I'm the lead singer of two bands but I am not very extroverted. I am bemused by success as a musician as it sometimes feels like a cruel hoax the universe has played on me. I am better suited to be the proverbial mad scientist working alone in his laboratory. I am uncomfortable with a lot of the trappings and lifestyle of the touring musician. I do enjoy performing but I don't party and I'm not much interested in talking about rock music."

In case you do want to talk to him about something, he suggests mathematics, economics, military history and amateur radio. Bone up on those subjects prior to Lowery's free in-store acoustic performance at Harvest. 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 2. First come, first served.

    • SWEET! David is definitely one of my favorite voices in music. He writes lyrics with poignant irony and the delivery is RIGHT THERE. A free performance in my own neighborhood is such a nice surprise.
